About SAF & High School Fishing
One of the fastest growing youth related movements across the country are High School fishing clubs!
The Bass Federation, the nation’s oldest and largest organized grassroots fishing organization, is leading the way with the development of the Student Angler Federation.
So what is the SAF? First of all, it’s a great way to promote education through fishing. Have you ever asked yourself, “when am I ever going to need to know this, or why do I need to learn that”? The objective of the SAF is to relate subject matter and basic principles of education to how anglers use them out on the water every day. Also, the SAF is aimed at getting students off the couch and back into the great outdoors by promoting the formation of fishing clubs and outdoor activities within the school. A byproduct of SAF efforts is the creation of competitive fishing in club tournaments and events between neighboring schools.
How can your school get started? The process is pretty simple. First, if you’re an educator or parent interested in starting a club, visit our contact page to apply for the free SAF email Packet.
If you’re a student, you can meet with your principal, a teacher or a parent volunteer to ask for help getting started.
Why join the SAF? The Bass Federation has more experience and active fishing clubs than any other organization. We know it’s necessary to build clubs up from an organizational standpoint with vital components like insurance coverage and experience in organized fishing events.

Lew Childre was a lot like his father, a man ahead of his time. Back in the 1940s, both men were blazing trails for many others to follow, but taking different paths.
Lew Sr. was an early day Grand Ole Opry star, a one-man show, entertaining with his proven repertoire of songs and jokes. Much of his time was spent on the road, traveling to appearances at fairs and community social events. Radios were few and far between, and television was just being invented, so what he did he had to do in person.
Like his dad, Lew was a likable guy. He made friends easily and people were always willing to listen to what he had to say. However, the only stringed instruments he was interested in were fishing poles. Lew Childre was born to fish.
His passion for the sport made for interesting times while growing up along the Gulf coast of Alabama, with every turn of a corner leading him back to fishing. He and his wife Vivian, or “Bebe,” encountered many trials and tribulations during their early years of marriage while trying to make a living and raise young sons Craig and Casey. First it was selling shrimp as bait to fishermen, and then that evolved into a small tackle shop. One day while pulling a bamboo pole out of the stack for a customer, Lew was disappointed with the inconsistency from one pole to the next. The moment of reflection triggered his insatiable thirst to build better fishing products than anyone else.

Since 1968, the independent state bass Federations have worked together to support the grassroots growth of fishing and the growth of the entire sport fishing/outdoors industry in their states. Simply put, The Bass Federation, Inc. ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The Bass Federation or “TBF” as we are commonly known, is the largest and oldest broad-based, independent, grassroots organization in fishing, and truly is the backbone of the entire sport. The success of the Federation in improving and furthering the sport of fishing has been monumental and continues to be felt worldwide.
TBF is a proud and honored member of the fresh water fishing hall of fame.
While our members’ accomplishments are far too numerous to list, many of them boil down to two key areas: youth and conservation.
YOUTH
In the youth area, we have focused our efforts on the sport’s number one priority: get young people fishing. That includes just getting a fishing rod in their hands, as well as getting families outdoors.
These efforts are key when it comes to facilitating the recruitment of young anglers and introducing them to the values and ethics of fishing and the outdoors.
